Is this a preview of what's to come with the hardcore Tacoma TRD Pro?

It is now an annual expectation that Toyota updates the TRD Pro versions of its Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, and Sequoia off-road trucks and SUVs. Typically, these changes are minor (a new paint color here, a new snorkel intake there), so we're not going to read too much into Toyota's release of two photos depicting what appear to be the front wheels of two separate Tacoma pickups. Or should we?

As part of a wide-ranging electrification announcement detailed Sunday, Toyota confirmed it is developing electrified trucks, including fully electric and hybrid models. The Japanese manufacturer is not yet saying which model lines will receive these technologies, but the company says it "intends to bring electrification to its pickup truck lineup in the near future, including hybrid and BEV powertrains." Rumors persist that the third-generation full-size Tundra, expected to debut later this year, will be among those vehicles.

What is this new mystery model?

Toyota is no stranger to building off-road-capable SUVs and pickup trucks. The Japanese brand currently builds a slew of TRD Pro variants, including the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and 4Runner, plus the legendary Land Cruiser (for now). Despite catering to off-road enthusiasts, Toyota has never taken a direct swing at the Jeep Wrangler or the upcoming Ford Bronco; even the old FJ Cruiser was not a direct Wrangler rival. But that may soon change.
